What is Digitizing for Embroidery?
If you've ever ordered custom embroidered apparel, you may have heard the term digitizing, but what exactly does it mean? Digitizing is the first step in the embroidery process and entails turning your logo or artwork into a file that an embroidery machine can read. Unlike printing, embroidery machines don’t work with image formats like vectors, JPG, or PNG. Instead, they need a special type of file that tells the machine exactly where and how to stitch.
Digitized files transfer information to the embroidery machine, such as:
Stitch type (satin, fill, run, etc.)
Stitch direction and angle
Thread color changes
Stitch density and length
Image size
Digitizing files requires specialized software, knowledge of the embroidery process from start to finish, knowledge about the type of garment the artwork will go on, and knowledge about what type of file your embroidery machine accepts (there are different file types across brands of embroidery machine).
The type of garment and the material it is made of will also impact the way a file is digitized. For instance, a hat will need different thread densities than a shirt. Likewise, a sport-wicking polo shirt and a traditional cotton polo will require separate digitized files, as the thread density will need to be less for the sport shirt.
Why Digitizing Matters
A high-quality digitized file is key to a great-looking embroidered product. Poor digitizing can result in thread bunching, misalignment, or a design that doesn’t translate well onto fabric. That’s why we either digitize your artwork in-house or work with trusted partners to get it done right the first time.
Is There a Fee?
We do not charge a separate fee for digitizing. We factor the cost of digitizing your artwork into the price we quote you.
Can Any Image Be Digitized?
Most logos and simple artwork can be digitized, but intricate designs with small text or shading may need to be adjusted. Our team can often simplify or adapt your design so it embroiders cleanly and clearly.
In Summary
Digitizing is a behind-the-scenes process that sets the stage for beautiful embroidery. It ensures your design is translated accurately from screen to stitch. At Zoza Ink, we handle this with precision and care, so your custom apparel looks as great in real life as it does in your vision.
